Should I switch careers?

Should I switch careers?

I've been an graphic designer / Art Director for about 8 years, and with the economy going sour, my career path has been dramatically affected. I'm starting to think that a career switch would be good, yet I don't have the funds to go back to school to learn a new trade.

I have been thinking about joining the US Army to become a helicopter repairman, because it offers the G.I. Bill, Advanced Individual Training, and College Loan Repayment.

Honestly, the military lifestyle is not my thing, but at the same time, I don't want to work a dead end job as a messenger while searching for a design job. Plus, the idea of aviation repair seems exciting to me in that it's technical, and hands on. You either fix something or you don't.

I'm tired of creating design work to please the aesthetic sensibilities of people who have no visual taste.

I feel that pursuing a design career is like beating a dead horse in this economy. Plus, I'm getting sick of the extreme ups and downs in this industry – it's not very stable, financially.

Am I being too impatient, or should I switch careers? The urge inside gets stronger as each mundane work day passes. I feel directionless, and need some kind of career path to pursue with a promise of success.

I'm having a hard time making a decision, because I have spent so much time developing my career as a designer. I'm 34 years old now, and feel like if I switch careers, all the hard work I put in will amount to nothing.

Does anyone have any similar life experiences? If you were in my position, what would you do?

Thanks.

If you are looking at the military I would strongly recommend the Air Force over any other branches. They get treated like normal human beings. I did 4 years in the USMC and I can had friends in every branch of service. You will never have to clean any toilets in the Air Force. I think every military branch have a cut off age, so your options might be limited.

I am 36 and I'm in the process of changing careers right now. Just because you have a degree does not guarantee you a job. After 5 years in the corporate world, it becomes very apparent that to get ahead I would need to develop some serious *** kissing skills. I refuse to sell my soul in that manner. I am going into law enforcement. You should check it out. The pay is very competitive and they have a great retirement program. It is not your 401k that shrinks in half over night.
